The Seat of the Saxon Monarchy in Dresden

Dresden Castle is the oldest edifice in Dresden, having been built around 1200.  At first it was the residence of the Electors before becoming the seat of the kings of Saxony.  A great part of the castle was destroyed during the Second World War, but it is now fully restored, with the public able to enjoy the range of architectural styles displayed there, from Romanesque to Baroque.

Dresden’s Answer to the Versailles

The Zwinger Castle was a building commissioned by Augustus the Strong, the Elector of Saxony, to commemorate his ascension as the King of Poland.  It is one of Dresden’s most important landmarks, and it was built out of Augustus the Strong’s desire to have something as magnificent as the Versailles in France.
