The architect Gottfried Semper was asked to build a representative opera house back in 1838. Already in 1869 it become a victim to a fire. Semper's son Manfred conducted the second attempt to reconstruct the opera in an Italian renaissance style from 1871 to 1878. Then in the II. world war it again was destroyed. Between 1977 and 1985 the Opera was rebuilt according to the last original plans. Thanks to the great quality of the Saxon city opera ensemble this house belongs to one of the world wide most profiled cultural facilities.
