Zwinger /Kennel

For Saxon's elector, “Kurfürst”, Ausgust the great the builder Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser formed one of the most important constructions of the late baroque era in Europe. The name “Zwinger” , kennel, came into being thanks to the position between the outer and inner fort wall. Initially built as an orangery this place now withholds historic collections such as the gallery “Alte Meister”, a chamber of old armoury and the animal zoology museum.
